    Worth the worry

    I worry a lot. I either say “I’m worrying”, or people tell me I worry. The OED defines worry as: A troubled state of mind arising from the frets and cares of life; harassing anxiety or solicitude. I don’t think I was ever worried before I was 22. Sure I suffered short-term stress during my undergraduate degree maybe, but never felt worried for long periods of time. 3 years later it’s a different story completely, for me. Worry/stress/anxiety is different for everyone, so I’m not attempting to simplify it or talk about anyone else’s experiences apart from mine.     Online communication

    There’s enough stats out there comparing the links between the rising levels of depression and the Internet, bullying and social media, lack of body confidence and media stars and the dangers of young children and online strangers. We know that the web can be a dark and scary place. But there’s a lot of good that comes from it. I am certain that the Internet is encouraging better communication with people you wouldn’t usually engage with if you hadn’t ‘met’ online, and helping our existing friendships.     When you need a giggle

    When people felt down, hundreds and thousands of years ago, how did they make themselves feel better? I imagine they went on walks (as Elle Woods says, “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy”), or they had other things to worry about like not catching the plague or running away from an animal trying to eat them. If I’m feeling low, I sometimes watch videos to brighten my day. There are a few Youtube videos that always crack me up, even if I’ve seen them a hundred times before.
