I’m a few days late with posting my favourites from March. March was a funny old month. Nothing particularly bad happened, but I just feel a bit deflated after it as you can see from my lack of posts. March had good days like seeing The Bodyguard on tour and planning some exciting things for later on this year, yet I’m still feeling a little glum. I was half tempted to skip a monthly favourites altogether, but I knew if I did I would find it hard to get back into the swing of blogging and it’s something I want to continue doing, even if it’s just silly little lists like this.
So to start my new goal of blogging more, here are my favourite things from March.
British Television
Though my Letterboxd diary says otherwise, I don’t feel like I’ve watched a lot of films this month. Instead, March has reminded me just how good British TV is.
I very rarely watch live television. Everything is either streaming services or catch-up, so due to that I have been very late to the party with two of my favourite television shows in March.
Catastrophe, the comedy drama on Channel 4 written by and starring Sharon Horgan and Rob Delaney, has been my favourite. I binged the whole thing in 4 nights and I feel like I could rewatch it a hundred times. It’s both stupidly silly, but also incredibly real as it tackles huge issues like postnatal depression, alcoholism, parents dying, and more. The depiction of a realistic relationship really stuck with me though, helped by the hilariously fantastic duo Horgan and Delaney portraying the flawed, lovable couple.
Around the same time as watching Catastrophe, it felt like a million people were telling me that I’d love Fleabag. I think I’m quite easy to recommend things to, because I’m quite obvious in my taste so I knew this would be good. Somehow though, Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s BAFTA winning comedy drama is even better than I anticipated. It’s extremely dark, and hilarious, touches upon serious subjects and features tons of sex. Waller-Bridge needs to make more television shows, films, books, art, musicals, literally anything and I will want to consume it entirely because she’s a genius.
I am loving the return of Alan Partridge with This Time. I have to physically put objects in front of my face, whether it’s my hands or a pillow, to hide myself from the typically embarrassing, no, absolute mortifying situations Alan gets him into. Just some of my highlights so far has been when Alan went vegetarian for a week, “ If there’s any pieces of meat left over at the end of the week, you can take a used Magnum stick, shove it inside them and hey presto you’ve got meat lollies for the car”, and Lolly Adefope as the correspondent who hates Alan. It’s classic Alan and proves that Coogan’s still got it.
Film viewings
I watched a few films in March generally, but not enough cinema visits. Of those cinema visits, there are two that I feel are worthy of a mention.
Us
Another feat for Jordan Peele after his impressive directorial debut Get Out. Us is the type of film that continues to get better the moment you leave the cinema, because you can’t help but retrace every step in the film to see if you missed anything. It’s been a couple of weeks and my partner and I are still dissecting every element to this brilliant, sensational, unique masterpiece. It’s an outrage really that Lupita Nyong’o isn’t the star of more films.
Wild Rose
This is just soooo lovely. Jessie Buckley is a treasure; her voice is heavenly and she truly breaks your heart in this film. I love how Wild Rose isn’t full of clichés, despite being a simple story of a young woman trying to break out and become a music star. The songs are beautiful too.
in my head
I can’t stop listening to this song. One thing I love about Ariana Grande’s songs is how her and her writing team write songs so poetically.
My imagination’s too creative
They see Cain and I see Abel, Abel, Abel
I know you’re able, willing and able.
Falling, falling, but I thought that you would need me
Falling, falling, needed something to believe in,
I thought that you were the one
TOTM
If you follow me on Instagram and watch my stories, you’d have seen my love for this company this month. TOTM sell organic cotton tampons, pads and liners, and they do subscription services.
From their site:
Mainstream brands are not required to list product ingredients. So, we did some digging and made it our mission to expose the truth about tampons.
We’re passionate about providing period care alternatives that are kind to your body and kind to the environment. That means using planet-friendly, sustainable materials wherever possible. We proudly use non-GM organic cotton in our tampons, pads and liners and eco-alternatives such as biofilm wrappers. We even deliver products in carbon positive sugarcane mailing bags!
We’re also proud to also be certified cruelty-free and vegan.
I am planning a series soon on period chats, having started to use more eco-friendly ways to handle my time of the month and look after my body a bit better. TOTM are one brand I recommend. Their customer service team are fab, but most importantly the products are great. Their pads and liners feel comfier than the mainstream brands I was using for years and they are better for the environment!
